About Sully Castle
In the beautiful Burgundy countryside, about 35 km from Beaune, stands the majestic Château de Sully, a Renaissance château built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries on the site of an earlier medieval fortress. Its architecture combines medieval towers, 18th and 19th century additions, a remarkable Renaissance courtyard, and a water-filled moat crossed by a stone bridge. The château is recognized as the largest Renaissance château in southern Burgundy. The Renaissance courtyard was created for Gaspard de Saulx-Tavannes, a close confidant of Queen Catherine de’ Medici. Visitors can explore the château’s furnished interiors, parkland, chapel, experimental vegetable garden, tearoom, gift shop, and seasonal cultural events. Today, the château remains the residence of the Duchess of Magenta and her family, who continue to oversee and promote this historic estate. The Château de Sully in Burgundy should not be confused with the Château de Sully-sur-Loire in the Loire Valley, which is associated with Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully.
